Biography

Catherine Elizabeth Schissel was born in McBride, British Columbia and raised in the East Kootenay region. Well received throughout North America, C.E. Schissel’s work is included in many private and corporate collections.

“I have a deep respect for the fragility of the natural North American landscape. Having been fortunate to live and travel in many parts of Canada and the United States, I am continuously challenged by the unexpected passing moods of nature. An avid hiker and photographer, I work from location sketches and photographs taken while exploring my subject matter. Many of my recent works are inspired by the sublimity of the forest, and depict historical aspects of our heritage. Presently residing in the Ottawa valley, recent influences include the Gatineau Hills, the Laurentians, the Algonquin region, the Marlboro Forest, and other areas in close proximity.”

“Primarily self-taught, I am presently working with oils, acrylic and pastel mediums. Many of my preliminary sketches are executed in pen and ink. The loose and seductive quality of mark making in my work is meant to invoke and lure the viewer into an experience of landscape that reveals its mysterious and powerful nature.”
